I want to rock… Rock!
For girls who like to rock, check out the “Girls Rock Camp Austin”. This rock camp, based in Austin, Texas, uses musical education and performance to help empower awesome young women of all backgrounds and abilities. Exclusively for girls, qualified counselors will instruct campers in guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals.
There are two sessions of the camp in June and July. A few of their workshops include: songwriting, music history, music journalism, getting started in the music biz, decoding images of girls in pop culture, and how to make your own band t-shirts and buttons!
Since this camp is a nonprofit, they needed some support to get this years’ camp up and running. A few events to help raise funds were signed guitar giveaways from Dolly Parton and Joan Jett, and a day party at the SXSW Festival featuring some of today’s best all-female bands!
For more up to date info on the camp, events being held, and how you can help with donations, check out the Girls Rock Camp Austin Blog.
For girls who like to rock (like me)… Applications are online now!
Rockin’ Out,
Pluto

Future drummers of Pluto’s Interstellar Rock Band, check this out! There is a new publication on magazine stands devoted entirely to female percussionists from around the world! It’s called “Tom Tom Magazine”. It is the brain-child of Mindy Abovitz, a 10 year vet who is currently the drummer for Taigaa, an all-female experimental post-punk band.
