“Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.”

Don’t worry, after she’s done with her tantrum I’m sure she’ll figure out a way to use this to her advantage….

New Galaxy Girls??

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Do you know about the raging debate that been going on for years over Pluto? Astronomers have been arguing over it’s true classification. Too big to be a asteroid, but too small for some to be a planet. I’ve seen some documentaries and read several articles about it. It’s fascinating. I can’t help but imagine that our Pluto would be really pissed about it.

So an international commitee of astronomers is proposing a new definition of what a planet is, and if it is accepted, we would not only finally classify Pluto as a planet, we would also be adding the bodies known as Ceres (a really big object asteroid between Mars and Jupiter,) Charon (Pluto’s moon) and the temporarily named 2003 UB313, which was discovered only recently. (UB213 is awaiting it’s official name, but has been nicknamed Xena for now.)

Funny, I’ve already been working on a UB313 to add to the Galaxy Girls, but my wheels are already turning on the others!

Less sewing, more drawing

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

I’ve put sewing aside for a little while to do some drawing. As of right now, I only have one finalized piece of art of each girl except Neptune. For purposes such as packaging and the website update I’m planning for October, I’ll be needing more. I’m hoping for 5 new poses for each character, and 10 for Milky Way. But seeing as that’s 60 drawings, we’ll just have to wait and see how much I actually get done with the work I still do on Foster’s taking up a lot of my time. I’m putting the four that will be in stores on the top of the priority list, so here are the first sketches of them:

Planet Purses

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

I am making prototypes for messenger bags that will come with the dolls. Inside will be an alternate outfit, a story about your Galaxy Girl, and other goodies like stickers and what not. What’s best, is the messenger bag can double as a little hand purse for you (if you’re a little girl or if you dig cutesy hand purses for some other reason.) So the gimmick with the bag is that they look like the planet the girl is named for. As you can imagine, that may be easy for planets like Staurn and the Moon and maybe even Jupiter which all have very distinguishable marks, but difficult for any other planet that doesn’t automatically conjur a familiar image in your head. Say like, Mercury or Neptune. In any case, here are the first three, designed by my friend Martin Ansolabehere, and I think he did a fantastic job of not only capturing the feel of the planet, but pulling it in to work with the color pallete of the girl!! I transfered his image onto fabric and quilted them. They will be the fronts of the purse.

JUPITER—

VENUS—

PLUTO—

And here is the look of the purse they will eventually be on. This prototype is made of simple muslin. The finals will have coordinating colors to their girl. Martin is designing a spiral galaxy for Milky Way’s purse. I will post it when it’s done.

Uranus

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Sorry it’s been a bit of a wait for a new post. Since I’ve come back from Conicon, I’ve been busy on Foster’s. However, I have been able to get a little work in. Namely, I’m starting a new doll: Uranus! Here is her original art from a few years ago, the revised sketch and her new art:

And here is her future doll face, pre and post embroidery:
